Chiara Mollo – Nurse MSF Immunization campaign at Endebess Hospital organized by MSF with the Ministry of Health. ENDEBESS, KENYA MSF B The camp at the district officers area in ENDEBESS has swelled with IDP’s in the wake of Kenya’s disputed election of Dec. 27, 2007. The majority of people say that their homes were attacked and burnt forcing them to flee their homes. The local chiefs recommended people flee to ENDEBESS where their safety could be assured. The first few days people spent sleeping outside. some people, women in particular, had been sent to the camp for safety as they or their families had been threatened. Also worth mentioning that numbers continued to grow during the few days that we were there and reports of houses nearby continuing to be burnt down.
At last count (29 Jan) around 1000 tents. When we were there Alexis estimated 2500 people but growing. Seems possible that it has grown to around 4000 in the last few days MSF is building tents because one of the first priorities in this kind of situation is to provide shelter. In ENDEBESS we found that many people were not able to construct their own shelter (lack of knowledge, lack of resources such as pangas, ropes etc) so we started to build them. Water and sanitation facilities (toilets and water bladders) were also installed and some non-food items like blankets and cooking sets have been distributed. MSF IS now starting to build latrines. When we were there non-food item kits containing blanket, soap, hygiene kit, jerry can and plastic sheeting, distributed to 570 people Will continue to support the hospital as needed in terms of supplies and assistance. Vaccination campaign for over 1000 children under five measles and polio. Working closely with other organisations such as Kenyan Red Cross and Handicap International to ensure medical needs are covered.
